Here is another neat fact I found watching the discovery channel. Roman gladiators would add layers of fat before matches so the could more easily sustain slashing attacks. They fattened up by eating barley. So much so that they were nicknamed "barley munchers". Intersting that with all the foods they had available they chose grain to gain fat specifically.
